In 2010 overall new NAS installations grew by 49% up 43% in 2009. Since Sun Mircosystems developed the Network File System (NFS) Protocol back in 1984 NAS Appliance vendors such as Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), Overland Storage Snap Servers, AMI StorTrends and Data Robotics Drobo Solutions have been developing new uses and taking advantage of today's higher perfroming, higer capacity hard drives.

Network attached storage arose as a solution to the many problems associated with DAS (direct attached storage). Direct attached storage was the only way for data centers to store centralized data at first. As storage needs increased, there were problems with manageability. Adding capacity usually meant adding additional servers to your infrastructure, resulting in wasted capacity and increased downtime.

NAS gives you the ability to separately scale file storage and serving capabilities without having to add expensive and difficult-to-manage servers.
