Data Storage Systems, Inc. (DSS, Inc.) staff are experts in data protection and storage area networking solutions. Disk to Disk to Tape (D2D2T) solutions from , Intradyn, Overland Stroage, Quantum and DSS, Inc.'s own custom designed D2D2T solutions to meet the needs of a variety of data storage applications. In essence it takes the best from both worlds. D2D2T is an approach to computer storage backup where data is first copied to a disk storage system and then copied again to a tape backup system. It provides a way to expedite backup by first copying data directly from one tier of disks to another, then enabling tape backup as a separate operation. |
The data will reside on the second tier disk until it is ready for long-term archive, which allows it to serve both as a staging area for the tape backup and a holding area that is available for quick restores. The idea is to back up from the production disk to a backup disk as quickly as possible. Once the Disk-to-Disk (D2D) portion has finished, files can be backed up to tape at a more comfortable pace without impacting the performance of the primary storage space. |
Advantages of D2D2T: • Quick backups & restores will reduce network bandwidth issues • Reduced backup window concerns • Consolidated storage • Portability of tape provides security against fire, theft, viruses, & natural disaster • Tape provides a cost effective solution for long term archive |
Develop a long-term plan to meet business and regulatory requirements Regulatory requirements are on the rise, which means more data stored for longer periods of time. But can this be achieved with a single technology approach? Disk along with deduplication is fast but should be balanced with tape to meet long-term retention requirements and regulations. Tape has a low total cost of ownership, low environmental impact, ability to encrypt, portability for disaster recovery, and durability. Manage and Contain your Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) The pace of data is far exceeding most IT budgets. So how do you control and manage opex and capex costs? A blend of disk, deduplication, and tape technologies can help you meet retention requirements while reducing total cost of ownership. Tape has a very low acquisition cost. In addition automated libraries enable you to lower operational costs by allowing you to consolidate TB’s into a single location while reducing the dollars you will spend on warranty, power and cooling. Encrypt your data for secure long-term retention Worldwide data protection regulations are being implemented to address harmful data breeches. How can you secure your data and meet new regulations? Encrypt data at rest on tape. With the introduction of LTO-4 drives and the integrated hardware based encryption; data stored on tape is completely secure at levels that meet government standards. Weigh Environmental impacts and minimize power and cooling costs Power, cooling, and space requirements are key issues for IT departments because of rising costs and the environmental impact. How do you control the cost of power and minimize the impact on the environment? Find the optimal balance of performance and cost by leveraging multiple technologies like data deduplication and tape. Deduplication helps to lower costs associated with disk backup, and tape is ideal for long term archiving due to its low power consumption. Also, once tapes are stored in a vault, the power cost is zero as they require NO power or cooling. Simplify management of the entire solution Smartly, you’ve implemented a balance of disk and tape. But how do you manage multiple devices without complexity and ensure you can get your data back quickly? Simplify with software that centrally manages both disk and tape devices for streamlined management and reduced IT overhead. Do it from one convenient screen with rich diagnostics, reporting, and faster troubleshooting. |
